Rep. Al Green, Democrats Protest Against Trump’s Speech to Congress

Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green was removed from the House chamber after heckling President Trump. This happened during Trump’s first address to a joint session of Congress in his second term. Green’s protest broke a long-standing tradition.
A Heated Exchange in Congress
Green interrupted Trump when the president mentioned his 2024 election victory. He claimed to have received a mandate from the American people. However, Green stood up and shouted in protest.
House Speaker Mike Johnson warned him to stop. But when Green continued, the Sergeant at Arms escorted him out.
“The president does not have a mandate,” Green repeatedly shouted.
Later, speaking to reporters, he defended his actions. “It’s worth it to let people know that some will stand up to Trump,” he said.
Silent and Symbolic Protests
Meanwhile, other Democratic lawmakers protested more quietly. A group of women, wearing “Resist” T-shirts, walked out. Others held black signs with the word “False.”
Rep. Maxwell Frost also walked out. He wore a shirt that read “No kings live here.”
“In the spirit of student protesters from the Civil Rights Movement, I’m proud to have walked out with my colleagues,” Frost posted on social media. “This is NOT a normal time.”
Democratic Opposition in Congress
Although Republicans control both chambers, Democrats continue to resist Trump’s policies. Many also support nationwide protests against drastic government changes.
Despite the challenges, Democratic lawmakers remain vocal. They make their stance clear inside and outside Congress.
