Minnesota Reports First Bird Flu Case in Dairy Herd This Year

A dairy farm in Stearns County, Minnesota, has been placed under quarantine after confirming the presence of the H5N1 bird flu virus in its milk supply. This is the first dairy cow infection reported in Minnesota this year and marks the second case for the same farm, which houses 620 cows.

Milk Supply Remains Safe

Despite the presence of the virus, state health officials have assured the public that the milk supply remains safe. Pasteurization effectively kills the virus, ensuring that the milk is safe for consumption.

Bird Flu and Human Risk

Authorities emphasize that while the risk to the general public remains low, farm workers who handle infected animals may have a higher chance of exposure. To mitigate the risk, the Minnesota Department of Health is providing personal protective equipment (PPE) to dairy farms.

Statewide Testing and National Impact

Minnesota’s dairy farms are now required to undergo monthly H5N1 testing as part of efforts to monitor and contain the virus.

Nationally, 70 people have been infected with H5N1, with one reported death, according to the CDC.

Minnesota, a major dairy and turkey producer, has lost over 9 million birds to the ongoing bird flu outbreak since it began three years ago.

Officials emphasize that early detection and containment are key to protecting both animal and human health as they continue to monitor and respond to the virus.
