Most Gravity-Defying Opener: ‘Wicked’ Steals the Show at the Oscars
When it was announced that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo would perform at the Oscars, many assumed they would sing something from Wicked, the film for which they were both nominated. And they did—delivering a breathtaking performance that paid tribute to Hollywood’s evolving vision of L. Frank Baum’s magical world of Oz.
Grande made a stunning entrance in a sparkling red gown, complete with an actual ruby slipper affixed to the back. Channeling Judy Garland, she mesmerized the audience with a heartfelt rendition of Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz.
As she gracefully stepped aside, Erivo took center stage, delivering a soulful performance of Home—Dorothy’s iconic ballad from The Wiz, originally performed onscreen by Diana Ross.
Then came the grand finale. The duo closed with the show-stopping Defying Gravity, the signature song from Wicked. Erivo’s shiver-inducing war cry sent chills through the audience, making it a performance to remember.
Later in the night, the land of Oz returned to the spotlight once more when Queen Latifah paid tribute to Quincy Jones with a rousing performance of Ease on Down the Road.
The night truly belonged to Oz, proving that its magic continues to captivate audiences across generations.
