A tragic shooting occurred at UPMC Memorial Hospital in West Manchester Township, York County on Saturday morning. The incident left a police officer and the shooter dead, along with several injuries. Authorities reported an “active threat” at around 10:43 a.m., prompting a swift response from law enforcement. Officer’s Death and Community Mourning
The shooter killed Officer Andrew Duarte of the West York Borough Police Department before officers neutralized the threat. West York Borough officials confirmed Duarte’s death in a Facebook post, expressing condolences for the loss of a hero and a beloved colleague.
“We mourn the loss of Officer Andrew Duarte, a true hero,” the statement read.
The attack did not harm any patients at the hospital. However, authorities are still investigating the extent of other injuries.
Hospital Response and Public Safety Measures
After the 911 call, police responded quickly and neutralized the threat. UPMC Memorial advised non-scheduled employees to stay home. Families of patients were directed to the OSS building parking lot across the street for updates. The hospital, which opened in 2019, serves as a key medical center in the region.
Government Officials’ Reactions
Governor Josh Shapiro, en route to the scene, ordered flags to fly at half-staff in honor of Officer Duarte. “He was the best of us,” Governor Shapiro said, praising the officer’s service.
U.S. Senator John Fetterman expressed his sorrow, stating, “A place of healing became a place of tragedy.”

The community has begun to mourn Officer Duarte’s loss. Residents have left flowers at 1381 W. Poplar St., West York in his honor.
