College Student Asif Murder: Case Filed Against 377 People, Including Henry and Joy

A case has been filed over the murder of 19-year-old college student Asif Hossain, who was killed during an anti-discrimination student movement in Sirajganj. His mother, Asmani Khatun, lodged the case, naming former MPs Tanvir Shakil Joy and Jannat Ara Henry, along with 77 leaders of the ruling party. Additionally, 200-300 unidentified individuals have been accused.

The case was filed on Sunday at 10 AM in the Sirajganj Sadar Magistrate Court. Additional Public Prosecutor Humayun Kabir Colonel confirmed the development, stating that the court ordered the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sirajganj Sadar Police Station, Humayun Kabir, to register the case as an FIR.

Details of the Murder

 

Asif Hossain, son of Nazrul Islam from the Ekdala Rehabilitation neighborhood in Sirajganj Municipality, was a student at Sirajganj Government Technical School and College.

According to the case statement, on August 4, 2024, Asif and his friend Shahin Sheikh left home to participate in the student movement. At around 2 PM, a group led by former MPs Jannat Ara Henry and Tanvir Shakil Joy, along with other accused individuals, allegedly attacked the student protesters at the Chowrasta intersection. The attackers  Student Asif were reportedly armed with illegal firearms, shotguns, pistols, explosives, and petrol bombs.

During the chaos, Asif and Shahin were allegedly beaten to death. Their bodies were then taken to former MP Jannat Ara Henry’s residence, where they were hidden in a bathroom before being burned using gunpowder, as per the allegations.

Later, Asif’s remains were recovered and kept at Sirajganj Shaheed M. Mansur Ali Medical College Hospital. DNA testing was conducted to confirm his identity, and on March 4 of this year, his body was handed over to his family.

• Abdul Hakim: President of Sirajganj Sadar Thana Awami League

• Abdur Bari: Vice President of Sirajganj District Awami League

• Rubel: General Secretary of Sirajganj Municipal Chhatra League

• Khalilur Rahman Shiraji: General Secretary of Kazipur Upazila Awami League and former Upazila Chairman

• Abdul Hannan: Former Mayor of Kazipur Municipality

• Abdul Hai Bhutto: Organizational Secretary of Chowhali Upazila Awami League

• Kamrul Haidar Munna: Former President of Chowhali Upazila Jubo League

• Amjad Hossain: President of Bagbati Union Awami League

• Yusuf Ali: General Secretary of Bagbati Union Awami League

The police are currently investigating the case following the court’s order, and further legal proceedings are underway.
