Second Lady Usha Vance to Visit Greenland Amid Trump’s Talk of U.S. Takeover

Second Lady Usha Vance is scheduled to travel to Greenland this week as President Donald Trump continues to suggest that the United States should take control of the self-governing Arctic territory.

According to her office, Vance will depart on Thursday and return on Saturday, accompanied by one of her three children. She will be part of a U.S. delegation that will visit historic sites and engage in cultural exchanges. Reports from Greenlandic and Danish media indicate that Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, will also join the trip, though the White House and National Security Council have not confirmed this.

Trump’s Renewed Interest in Greenland

President Trump has long expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, the world’s largest island, which is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark. During his first term, he floated the idea of purchasing the island, despite strong opposition from Denmark and Greenlandic authorities.

Since returning to office in 2025, Trump has repeatedly suggested that the U.S. will eventually gain control over Greenland. While he insists that his interest is primarily for national security reasons, critics view it as a move toward territorial expansionism.

During a recent Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump questioned Denmark’s right to govern Greenland:

“Denmark’s very far away from Greenland. A boat landed there 200 years ago or something. And they say they have rights to it. I don’t know if that’s true. I don’t think it is, actually.”

Greenland’s parliament issued a joint statement rejecting Trump’s claims, emphasizing their right to independence at a time of their choosing.

Vice President JD Vance: ‘Trump Doesn’t Care What Europeans Think’

Vice President JD Vance, speaking on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures”, defended Trump’s position, arguing that Denmark has failed to manage Greenland properly:

“Denmark is not doing its job with Greenland, not being a good ally. If that means that we need to take more territorial interest in Greenland, that is what President Trump is going to do.”

He also dismissed European criticism:

“Trump doesn’t care about what the Europeans scream at us. He cares about putting the interests of American citizens first.”

Cultural Events and Symbolic Visit

During her visit, Usha Vance will attend Greenland’s national dogsled race, the Avannaata Qimussersu, featuring 37 mushers and 444 dogs. A statement from her office highlighted the trip’s cultural significance:

“The U.S. delegation is excited to witness this monumental race and celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity.”

Despite the diplomatic tensions, the Biden administration and NATO allies will likely watch this visit closely, as Trump’s rhetoric on territorial expansion continues to escalate.

Beyond Greenland: Trump’s Territorial Ambitions?

Trump’s interest in Greenland is part of a broader pattern of controversial geopolitical statements. In recent weeks, he has:

  • Refused to rule out military intervention in Panama to retake the canal.

  • Suggested that Canada should become America’s 51st state.

  • Proposed that U.S. interests should assume control of Gaza and redevelop it into a seaside resort.

While the Trump administration maintains that these discussions are strategic, they have sparked global debate and concern among U.S. allies.
