175 Wildfires Erupt Across South and North Carolina, Forcing Evacuations
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency on Sunday as 175 wildfires raged across South and North Carolina, burning over 4,200 acres and threatening homes. Firefighters are battling the blazes, which have been fueled by strong winds and dry conditions.
Major Wildfires and Evacuations
One of the largest fires, the Carolina Forest Fire near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, scorched over 1,600 acres, forcing evacuations in Walkers Woods and Avalon. By Sunday afternoon, the fire was 30% contained, and evacuation orders were lifted later in the evening.
A second wildfire in Horry County, north of Carolina Forest, burned over 300 acres and was out of control as of Sunday morning.
In Georgetown County, South Carolina, another wildfire near Prince George expanded to 800 acres, prompting evacuations. Firefighters were gaining control by Sunday morning, and most evacuations were lifted.
In Pickens County, South Carolina, the Six Mile Mountain Fire forced evacuations but was 85% contained after burning 300 acres.
Across the border in Polk County, North Carolina, a fast-moving brush fire ignited near Highway 176 due to a downed power line. It spread to 400 acres overnight, forcing evacuations in Melrose, Tryon, and Saluda.
Statewide Burning Ban & Firefighting Efforts
Governor McMaster enforced a statewide burning ban, warning:
“That means you can and will go to jail for starting a fire outdoors in South Carolina, period.”
Firefighters continue working under red flag conditions, with wind gusts up to 40 mph making containment difficult. Officials have urged residents to stay vigilant as the cause of several fires remains under investigation.
