World Reacts to Zelenskiy-Trump Oval Office Clash
March 1 (Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and U.S. President Donald Trump clashed during a White House meeting on Friday, with the Zelenskiy-Trump clash quickly turning into a diplomatic disaster. The meeting, initially set to foster cooperation, ended in turmoil, sparking widespread reactions from political leaders worldwide.
Zelenskiy, in a post on X, expressed his gratitude for the visit despite the tensions surrounding the Zelenskiy-Trump clash, stating, “Thank you, America, for your support and for this visit. Special thanks to @POTUS, Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working toward that. It is crucial for Ukraine to be heard, both during and after the war. The people of Ukraine need to know they are not alone and that their interests are represented globally.” His comments followed the Zelenskiy-Trump clash, which has left many questioning the future of U.S.-Ukraine relations.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also weighed in on the Zelenskiy-Trump clash, stating, “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was illegal and unjustified. For three years, Ukrainians have fought courageously for democracy, freedom, and sovereignty. Canada will continue to stand with Ukraine in their quest for a just and lasting peace.” He further emphasized that “Ukraine can rely on Germany—and Europe—as they jointly seek a lasting peace,” showing solidarity with Zelenskiy despite the discord that followed the White House confrontation.
French President Emmanuel Macron commented on the Zelenskiy-Trump clash during his visit to Portugal, noting, “Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is the victim. We were right to help Ukraine and sanction Russia, and we must continue doing so. Together with the U.S., Europe, Canada, Japan, and many others, we must thank and respect those fighting for dignity, independence, children, and Europe’s security.” He also expressed concerns that any division, especially following the Zelenskiy-Trump clash, could weaken the West’s efforts in defending democratic values.
A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine, stating that the British government remains committed to the Zelenskiy-Trump clash outcome and is actively working toward a path for a lasting peace based on Ukraine’s sovereignty and security. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also commented, saying, “We will continue to stand with Ukraine as long as it takes. This is the struggle of a democratic nation against an authoritarian regime led by Vladimir Putin, who has imperialistic designs on Ukraine and the entire region.”
