Pranav Gundlapalle, head of India Financials at Bernstein, stated, “This will increase concerns over governance and other issues. The stock is unlikely to improve until a CEO with a three-year term is appointed.”
Macquarie Capital speculated that Kathpalia might step down, indusind bank share or the bank could appoint a public sector CEO. Suresh Ganapathy, associate director at Macquarie Capital, noted, “This creates uncertainty. The CEO may retire early due to the short tenure, or a PSU banker could replace him after one year.”
Market and Regulatory Uncertainty
Ganapathy also questioned why Kathpalia did not receive a three-year extension like other CEOs at AU Bank, City Union Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and RBL Bank. He stated, “In this context, this extension appears sub-optimal.”
Macquarie highlighted that stocks of Bandhan Bank and RBL Bank declined when PSU bankers became CEOs. Asset quality concerns contributed to this drop. Analysts warned IndusInd Bank could face a similar outcome if a PSU banker takes over.

Nitin Aggarwal, a banking analyst at Motilal Oswal, commented, “A one-year term adds uncertainty to leadership transition. However, it provides time to stabilize operations, address succession planning, and fix regulatory concerns.”
IndusInd Bank confirmed that the RBI had approved a one-year extension for Kathpalia. His term, originally ending on March 24, 2025, will now conclude on March 23, 2026. The bank’s board had proposed a three-year extension in September 2024. However, the RBI shortened the tenure, just as it did in March 2023 when it granted only a two-year term instead of three.

The brokerage also cut its FY26/27 earnings per share (EPS) estimate by 10.5per cent, signaling near-term earnings pressure.
BoFA Securities also downgraded the stock to “Underperform”, cutting its target to ₹850 per share, highlighting uncertainty over management succession and the potential 12-18 month timeline to gain clarity on the bank’s future direction.
Goldman Sachs maintained a “Neutral” stance with a target of ₹964 per share, emphasising that the short extension for the CEO delays clarity on management transition while the bank grapples with multiple operational challenges. – Governance
Meanwhile, Jefferies and Citi maintained “Buy” ratings but reduced their target prices. Jefferies lowered its target to ₹1,080 from ₹1,200, believing that the CEO’s shorter tenure may push the bank to initiate a succession plan, with Deputy CEO & CFO Arun Khurana emerging as a frontrunner for the top role. Citi, with a target of ₹1,378, noted that the one-year extension signals the RBI’s discomfort and creates uncertainty over CEO continuity beyond this period.
Macquarie retained its “Outperform” rating with a target of ₹1,210, acknowledging the shorter-than-expected CEO extension as a cause for concern but not ruling out the possibility of another renewal.
The uncertainty surrounding IndusInd Bank’s leadership transition and regulatory prescriptions is expected to weigh on investor sentiment, with analysts closely watching the bank’s operational performance under the existing leadership.
